One of the easiest things I seem to do is forget what really works to keep me feeling vital and healthy. Stinging Nettle is one of those things. It works wonders with my body, my emotions and my mind. It reminds me to slow down and connect with Spirit, to take time to feel my body and listen. And yet, I put it on the shelf and forget about it until I am in dire need.
Stinging Nettle is an herb. Some people would say a weed, but it commands far more respect from those of us who know and love it than that name would indicate. Nettle strengthens and tones the kidneys/adrenals, the lungs and the intestines. It’s a source of vitamins, minerals and trace elements. It helps the digestion by soothing and toning the organs. My favourite resource for herbs is Susun S. Weed’s book Wise Woman Herbal, Healing Wise.
In the Spring, Stinging Nettle nourishes us after our hibernation of Winter. It’s sting helps us to pay attention. It wakes us up to what needs healing. You can pick the leaves (wear gloves, as per its name it does sting) and cook them as you would spinach. They are full of vitamins, minerals and a plethora of other good things. You can dry the leaves, or buy them dried, and make tea. Sitting down with a cup is one of the things that brings peace and calm to my life.
I love to meditate with Stinging Nettle. I have a plant in my garden, and it brings me such joy to sit in front of it, close my eyes, and let it take me where it will. It seems to infuse me with a feeling of love (warmth in my entire being). Introduce yourself to Nettle and become a life-long friend, as I have.
